Balancing Humidity And Temperature

Comfort for one person might be considerably different for another, especially for people located in different parts of the world. A person living in Greenland will have a quite dissimilar concept of comfort than someone living in Central South America. A temperature of 72 degrees might be very pleasant in southern parts of the world, but considered too warm in colder climates.

Whatever the temperature level might be, the humidity has a great deal to do with comfort for anyone. Certain imbalances of the two create a living situation that will never provide an environment of comfort.

Again, where a person lives has much to do with comfort as it relates to humidity. A person living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania might think the summer humid there until they take a trip to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to discover what high humidity really means.

Conserving Energy via Climate Control

Conserving energy through climate control is very dependent on controlling humidity and temperature. With humidity where it should be, air conditioning can be set a few degrees higher and it will actually be more comfortable than at the lower temperature with an imbalance. Humidity balanced with the heating and cooling allows for improved health and fewer respiratory problems.

Proper Balance in Humidity

Balancing humidity and temperature is not as easy as turning on a humidifier attached to your central unit. If it were this easy, few people would have a problem. Two factors come into play when working to obtain a proper balance in humidity.

A large shift in outdoor temperatures causes a change to what amount of moisture needs to be in the home. A sudden drop outside means less moisture is needed inside. The problem of balance increases for those who have timers on thermostats that alter the temperature while they are sleeping to conserve energy.

A sure sign of a problem is water running down windows on the inside of the glass. This same issue is occurring at any penetrations where outside air meets inside air, and it can lead to serious structural problems if it is not addressed quickly.

A Dehumidifier as a Solution

Dehumidifiers are excellent when they are sized properly and operated as needed, but if knowledgeable professionals do not set them up, the results can be rather haphazard. Automated controls that take samplings of indoor and outdoor air quality can be very expensive and ineffective without the services of a trained technician.

The Importance of Energy Conservation

Conserving our precious resources has never been more important than it is now. Some worry about "going green" because they feel it will cost more money to do so, but the fact is conservation in the use of natural resources usually costs less over the long haul, and most changes along the eco-friendly line are generally better for overall health as well.
