If you’re finding that your home suddenly feels stuffy or clammy, or if common colds now seem like a chronic condition for your family members, it might be time to check the airflow in your home.
John Hodges-Copple and his wife Anne loved their historic 1910 home in Durham, and this family of 5 made use of every inch of the 3,400 sq ft footprint. But with only half the home air conditioned and while still relying on old radiators for heat, the home was both too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer.
In 2010, the family decided to renovate their kitchen and the scope of work quickly expanded to see if they could improve the energy efficiency and comfort of the whole home. Friends and neighbors referred them to Green Horizon as a trusted contractor, and after shopping around, John was pleased to select them not only because they were the only contractor able to do all projects at the same time (geothermal, sprayfoam and crawl space sealing), but also because John felt that the team, lead by Bobby, would work well with their chosen kitchen contractor.
PROJECT BENEFITS
Two seasons after completing the work, the Hodges-Copple family report that they really love their home now. The house before was drafty and it was impossible to host guests in either the hot summer months or the cold winter months. Now they report the home is tighter, more comfortable and much more efficient. One of the unexpected bonuses they report was how much more spacious the rooms feel now that they no longer have the old radiators taking up floor space.
In terms of energy costs, John and Anne are very pleased to report that bills have plummeted - in the winter, utility costs are less than half of what they were previously, and in the summer, they're able to air condition the whole home for less than the cost of air conditioning just the bedrooms the summer before!
THE CLIENT SAYS:
"The bottom line is that it's not just the technology; it's about educating yourself and looking at your options. The nice thing about Green Horizon is that they didn't come in with "here's our solution" - they work with customers to explore the best options." - John Hodges-Copple, Fall 2011
